Details: On Thursday, January 22, 2026, at approximately 10:13 PM, the Southampton Town Police Department received a report of a disturbance in a residence in Hampton Bays, New York. The caller reported a male resident of the house was knocking things down inside the residence. While Southampton Town Police Patrol Officers were responding, the complainant called back to report the male subject struck a female in the residence. When attempting to investigate what occurred, the male subject, Joseph Carrello, age 51, became combative with police officers striking them in the face and at one point grabbing one officer’s holstered gun. The female subject in the house tried to get to Carrello several times and was ordered to stay back while the responding officers were trying to complete the arrest process. She then physically pushed a responding officer in another attempt to get to Carrello. Eventually with the assistance of several police officers, Joseph Carrello, and Cheryl Thomason age 67 were both taken into custody. Carrello was charged with Assault 2nd -Felony (Intent to Cause Injury to an Officer/Fireman/EMT/Nurse), Criminal Obstruction of Breathing (Felony), Attempted Robbery 2 (Felony) and Resisting Arrest (Misdemeanor). Thomason was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd (Misdemeanor) and Harassment 2nd (Violation). Carrello was transported to Southampton Hospital for medical evaluation and subsequently released to Southampton Town Police. Carrello and Thomason were processed at Southampton Town Police Headquarters and held for morning arraignment. Thomason was released on her own recognizance after arraignment and Carrello was held in lieu of bail and transported to Suffolk County Jail. The officer assaulted by Carrello was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of his injuries and subsequently released.
