1. Where can I buy the “green bags” used at the transfer stations?

Residents can purchase them at the Town Clerk’s Office, 116 Hampton Road, Southampton, and at 25 local stores. Large are 5 for $17.50, Small 5 for $9.75.

2. Does Southampton provide curbside pickup of garbage?

No, the Town of Southampton uses a pay-per-bag program for resident self-haulers only. Residents bring all household garbage in designated “green bags” and their recyclables to any one of the four town-operated recycling centers. The fees for garbage disposal are included in the price of the green garbage bags.

4. Are the transfer stations closed on holidays?

Yes, Southampton Town’s four transfer stations are closed on the following days:

5. What should I do with e-waste, such as old computers, printers, etc.?

Disposal of electronics is free of charge at the North Sea and Hampton Bays transfer stations. View recycling schedule fees.

6. How much does it cost to dispose of other things?

7. Should I separate my recyclables or keep them comingled?

Only household garbage should be placed in the green bags. All recyclables should be transported separately and placed in the appropriate location at the recycling center. Recyclables such as corrugated cardboard, mixed paper, cans, glass bottles and plastics #1 and #2 only are accepted at no cost to residents.

8. Do you accept yard waste?

Loose leaves brought in by residential self haulers are free all year. Brush is accepted at a small fee, depending on vehicle type. However, there are two “amnesty” periods when there is no charge for residential self-haulers. For more information, call 631-283-5210.

9. What is HDPE Thin Film Plastic?

Plastic shopping bags, drying cleaning plastic, and bubble wrap.

10. How do you dispose of Styrofoam-type projects?

Blocks can be discarded in green bags. Peanuts will be accepted at the UPS Store for recycling.

11. What do I do with used batteries?

Regular household batteries can go into the green bags. Rechargeable batteries are recyclable through vendors who sell them. Car batteries are recycled through service stations that sell them, or through Gershow Recycling in Medford.

12. What should I do with an old engine?

If a resident has a small engine with stale gasoline, it should be drained in an appropriate container and stored for STOP Day. The engine can be brought to North Sea or Hampton Bays to be disposed of in the metal bin.

13. Do I need to do anything special for disposal of paint?

Latex and water-based paints are safe to put in the green bags. The paint should be left open and outside (or well-ventilated area) during dry weather. Once dry, it is easily discarded in the green bag.
