In general, business inspections are performed annually, but public assemblies are required to be inspected twice per year because of the increased hazards associated with them. Fire marshals look for safety hazards and to determine compliance with applicable codes. Some of the things looked for, include:Public Safety - Fire Prevention
- Electrical, gas, heating systems are being safely maintained.
- Required systems, such as automatic fire suppression in commercial kitchens, fire alarm systems, and fire sprinklers are properly maintained and inspected.
- Extension cords cannot be used in place of permanent fixed wiring.
- Operational exit lights.
- Fire extinguishers are in proper locations and have been inspected by a company licensed within Suffolk County.
- Street numbers are visible.
- Dumpster is in compliance for location, as well as enclosure.
- Service stations with flammable liquid storage.
- Marinas with electrical wiring in wet locations.
- Bed and breakfasts, motels, and apartment complexes.
- Bars, nightclubs, and other public assemblies.
- Special events and temporary tents.
- Welding and other hot work.
- Storage of hazardous materials.
- Lumberyards and wood working facilities

If the violation is not considered a life safety hazard, you will have a certain amount of time to correct the problem. If the problem is a life safety hazard, or if the inspection history reveals a repeating problem, the fire marshal may issue you a summons. If you are given time to comply, the fire marshal will come back for a re-inspection. All violations should be corrected as soon as possible, even if the Fire Marshal indicates that they may not be back immediately for the re-inspection.Public Safety - Fire Prevention

The fire marshal assigned will investigate your complaint. If it is determined that a violation exists, the fire marshal may issue a notice of violation or a summons, depending on the nature of the violation. If the problem is not a life safety problem, the fire marshal may work with the individual responsible for the property for a brief period of time to achieve compliance. No. Open burning is severely restricted by local and New York State codes. The Town’s Department of Parks and Recreation does allow for limited use of fire with a valid facility use permit. If there are signs posted, the regulations in place there apply. If it is an area without signage in a residential area, safe parking is allowed on the sides of the roadway, with the exception of between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. If access by emergency vehicles is inhibited, tickets may be issued for safety violations even if there is no signage.Public Safety - Fire Prevention
