Supervisor Holds Public Hearing On The Sufficiency Of The Petition By East Quogue Voters To Hold A Vote On Incorporation
Several dozen residents turned out for a public hearing on Wednesday August 14, 2019 at 6pm at the East Quogue Fire Department on the sufficiency of the petition of registered voters in favor of holding a public vote on the possible incorporation of the Village of East Quogue. Pursuant to state law, Supervisor Jay Schneiderman held the hearing to listen to those who challenged the sufficiency of the petition. There were very few people who spoke.
Under state law, the Supervisor will be the sole decider on whether the petition is sufficient to call the vote. The hearing is now closed and the Supervisor has ten days to make his decision.
According to state law, the petition must include at least 20% of the registered voters of the proposed village, or 595 of the 2,974 registered voters.
If the petition is found to be sufficient, a public vote on the possible incorporation could take place within 40 days of the decision.
