The Hampton Bays Water District is proud to announce the successful completion of two critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving distribution system operations to isolated parts of the Water District. The projects, which have received approval and are now in operation, mark the most recent Capital Projects initiated by the Town to improve service to the customers of the Hampton Bays Water District and enable the continued safe and reliable delivery of potable water to the residents of Hampton Bays.
The first of these infrastructure projects is the construction of a new water main beneath Shinnecock Bay from the Coast Guard station to Dune Road. This project involved the installation of a water line that measures over 3,000 feet via directional bore beneath the bay bottom. The new water main will fortify the water supply on Dune Road and replace infrastructure that had experienced numerous breaks and interruptions over the past few years.
The second infrastructure project is the construction of a new water main across the Shinnecock Canal extending west to east from Sunset Avenue to Meschutt Beach. This new water line provides a secondary feed to the areas east of the Canal and will aid in improving pressure during high demand periods, as well as increasing the water available in the event of a fire flow situation.
These critical infrastructure improvements were made possible through the diligent efforts of the Hampton Bays Water District and the support of various organizations, including the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation through the Water Infrastructure Improvement Act. The Town and Water District were successful in securing grant funding in the amount of $2.72 million to help offset the costs of these improvements. The receipt of these grant funds represents a savings ultimately passed on to customers. In addition, a portion of the main crossing Shinnecock Canal was supported by funding secured by the Town from private entities as a stipulation in receiving water from the Hampton Bays Water District.
"We are thrilled to have completed these critical infrastructure projects that will improve water service to our residents and businesses," said Hampton Bays Water District Assistant Superintendent, James Kappers. "The new water mains will provide a more reliable and consistent water supply to previously underserved areas. We are grateful to our partners who supported us in making these projects a reality." With the successful completion of these infrastructure improvements, the Hampton Bays Water District remains committed to providing its customers with high-quality and reliable water service.
A celebration of the completion of these two critical infrastructure projects will take place on Monday, May 22, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. at Meschutt Beach, Canal Road and Old North Highway, Hampton Bays.
