On Tuesday, April 11, at the Southampton Town Board Meeting, the Town Board voted unanimously on a resolution sponsored by Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, liaison to the Dark Skies Committee, designating April 15 through April 22, 2023 as “International Dark Sky Week.” During this week, citizens and visitors alike will be encouraged to celebrate by doing their best to reduce their own light pollution, and then venturing outside to appreciate our beautiful star-filled sky in the company of family, friends, and neighbors.
“I encourage everyone to be mindful of their outdoor lighting, not only this week, but throughout the year,” stated McNamara. “It’s amazing how bright the night sky is without artificial lighting. Not only is it good for our health and the well-being of wildlife, it improves our quality of life.”
In this same spirit, Councilwoman McNamara put forth legislation amending various sections of the Town Code in an effort to enhance enforcement of Dark Sky laws. A public hearing will be held at the Town Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 25 at 6pm, regarding the proposed changes.
