The Southampton Youth Board, which is appointed by the Southampton Town Board, annually takes on some projects to advance well-being, and to educate the Town Board and the community about evolving and important issues that affect youth and families.  Over the past year, one of the priority issues identified by the Youth Board was food insecurity affecting many within the Town.  Recognizing current efforts by many organizations to feed families through food pantries and schools, the Youth Board felt that one way they could contribute was by establishing Free Little Pantries, available to the community day and night at accessible locations.

“Food insecurity, which is an issue for many in our Town, was heightened during the pandemic” said Councilwoman Julie Lofstad, liaison to the Southampton Youth Bureau.  “Many people who are using food pantries today never thought they would need help.   I’m very proud of our Youth Board, who saw a need in our community and did something about it.”

The first pantry was installed at the David Crohan Community Center located at 655 Flanders Road in Flanders.  This kiosk type box is conveniently stationed right off the parking lot so community members can easily pull off the road and safely help themselves to the food they need.   The Youth Board hopes to build more Little Free Food Pantries throughout the Town.

“The great thing about these pantries is that food can be picked up as needed, and donated to as community members are able,” said Nancy Lynott, Director of Southampton Youth Bureau.  “This keeps the box supplied with nutritious food and the entire community can become involved in supporting their neighbors in times of need.”

The Little Free Food Pantry accepts contributions of healthy, non-perishable food items that can be dropped off at your convenience.  All donations are welcome!
