As part of the newly launched strategic enforcement efforts, Southampton has created a “compliance through education” component to that program.

Letters are now being mailed to property owners in the Town of Southampton alerting them of planned strategic code enforcement operations in a new strategy to increase public safety. The move appears to be working according to engagement with the Code Enforcement Department and owners in the Hampton-West Community near Gabreski Airport.

135 letters along with copies of the law were sent in December warning property owners in Hampton-West Community that there will be a strategic operation in their area in January. Many owners have either called Code Enforcement or have come into Town Hall seeking rental permits or asking what needs to be done to bring their properties up to code. “We already have had people come into the office and fill out permit applications as a result of those letters, said Public Safety and Emergency Management Administrator Steven Troyd. “Our goal is compliance and public safety”, said Troyd.

The new approach comes on the heels of three recent crackdowns. Last week, a strategic Code Enforcement Operation in the Old Quogue Road Riverside area in Southampton Town found several violations including over-crowded houses and excessive vehicles. Officers from the Town’s Code Enforcement Department inspected 24 properties and issued 17 notices of violations and 2 summonses for illegal rentals, overcrowding, litter and debris and excessive vehicles. Two other strategic inspections; in October in the Hampton Bays area and in November in the Flanders/Riverside area found numerous violations. Violators are given 30 days to comply and inspectors return to make sure the properties have been brought into compliance with Town Code.
